The Traveller with scotch tension is a great little wheel that suits most spinners. Like the Traditional you can buy "add on" kits that allow you to adapt the wheel to your specific spinning needs. If you collect the complete set of kits, you will have a wheel that will spin almost any type of yarn you can imagine. With the Traveller you also have the bonus of portability. The wheel has been designed to fit snuggly into the boot of your car, so it's easy to take it with you to workshops, and spin-ins. The wheel is made from solid New Zealand Silver Beech and comes complete with 4 bobbins, threading hook, learn to spin booklet, and built in lazy kate. The Traveller Spinning Wheel now comes with Double Treadle as standard.

QUESTIONS and  ANSWERS:
I am interested in purchasing a spinning wheel. I have never spun, and I live in an area without access to classes, so I would need something that I can learn using video and books. I prefer to knit with medium to bulky yarn, so I would want a wheel that is set up for that, but that I could possibly purchase and change parts eventually and spin thinner yarn if I chose. I don't want a huge wheel, but I do have some space, so I don't need anything too tiny, either. Although cost is not my major consideration, I also don't want to break the bank--I'd prefer to pay a little more for quality. Could you please suggest a wheel and quote me a price that would include everything I would need to get started and shipping?
Thank you, Tina

Hi Tina,
Thanks for the email Tina and your interest in Spinning! I have a few favorite wheels I would recommend for you that will spin medium thickness yarns in a reasonably compact design. Take a look at the Kromski Sonata which has an optional Jumbo Flyer for thicker yarns and plying and it also folds up and goes into a carry bag which is cool. Also look at the Traveller wheel from Ashford. It doesn't fold up but is fairly compact, it features a modern upright design with small footprint. I would recommend you get a double treadle whichever way you go.

Another consideration is Double Drive which is featured on the Traveller but not on the Sonata.  Double Drive (not to be confused by Double Treadle) is a way to drive the flyer (spinning fork) in a more efficient way which is very cool and preferred by many spinners at all levels.  Any of our Double Drive wheels including the Traveller can be used in Single Drive mode/Scotch Tension Mode as well! Please feel free to call me here at the shop for more information anytime, I'm happy to help you find the perfect wheel 1-888-320-7746. We have lots more wheels here at the shop, those two I mentioned are just some favorites I thought might work well for you. I would also recommend Start Spinning the DVD set from Maggie Casey which is great for getting started and a great general reference tool.

Sincerely,
Travis

Aloha,
I am looking to purchasing my first ever spinning wheel. I'm so very excited. I really love your customer service and hope that this is part of the purchase. I live in Hawaii where there are no fiber or spinning stores.
Actually I don't even think that their is a guild. I am a beginner I would need lots of help and would hope that if a question would arise that you all would be there to help. i'm sure my husband can help with the set up but spinning itself, well no. I am looking  to be able to spin lace weight yarn to worsted weight.  I think that a double treadle would be great as well as a scotch tensioner. Thank you for all your help and time. Paradise Fibers seems like a great company.

Aloha Mahalo!

Thanks for the email and your interest in a new wheel. We have a wide variety of wheels here and I do have a few suggestions.

Most beginner wheels do have a scotch tension system/single drive system. Not to be confused by “single treadle”. Think of “treadle” as pedal…J  I would highly recommend you start with a double treadle unless you have your heart set on a traditional old school wheel because of looks. The double pedal/treadle are much more relaxing and easier to start with for sure and is generally preferred by most of our customers.

We offer Scotch Tension and Double Drive Wheels. The difference is that with Double Drive wheels you have the option to do Scotch or Double Drive which is cool. The Scotch tension is limited to Scotch which is ok but it’s kinda like driving your car with the brakes gently applied and not the most efficient.

What is scotch tension? Scotch Tension or Single Drive is basically a piece of string or fishing line that is pulled across the bobbin to slow it down which allows the yarn to twist before it’s pulled onto the bobbin while spinning. Long story short it puts drag on your bobbin, it’s easy when you’re learning but not the most efficient way to spin. Double Drive is cool because it actually has a much larger drive band, twice as large actually, that is wrapped in a figure 8 around the flyer and the bobbin. The whorls (or round discs) where the drive band rides are different sizes on the bobbin and the flyer respectively creating different ratios of turning…without putting any drag on the work which is super efficient and accurate for obtaining perfect twist.

Two of our most popular wheels to start with are the Ashford Traveller or the Kromski Sonata. They are both around $500-600 and are really nice to use. The Sonata would be a great scotch tension option and it does fold up for travel and storage. The Traveller has a Double Drive option but doesn’t’ fold up. At the end of the day, either wheel will be fun to use but looks are important too. Take a peek at them and let me know what you think, call or email anytime with questions.

PS. I also have a great DVD on spinning called Start Spinning with Maggie Casey that is the next best thing to having a personal instructor, I highly recommend it.

[...] Great Wheel February 13, 2011
Reviewer: Satisfied Customer from Salisbury, NC
[...] I love my wheel. I am a fashion marketing student and I can sit this in my car and take with me because I do a good bit of demonstrations for the textiles classes at my school. Absolutely a wonderful investment. When people ask me where I went to get my wheel or supplies for my Ashford I tell them Paradise Fibers because I am very satisfied and will be purchasing extra bobbins and a new jumbo flyer very soon. Thanks so much for such a onderful experience.

awesome wheel! November 25, 2010
Reviewer: Spindling Jenny from Cedar Falls, IA
This was my first wheel and continues to be my go-to wheel. Nothing else satisfies. The double treadle is a must for smooth spinning, and the double drive gives me the right amount of tension control. It's easy to haul and takes up a tiny corner in my house.  I will never give it up!

Can't Stop Spinning! September 23, 2010
Reviewer: Rascal Ragamuffin from Bentonville, Virginia
I wanted a more compact and faster spinnign wheel.  I ordered the Ashford Travellor because of my years of good spinning with an Ashford Traditional wheel.  The service was excellent, [...] and with the extra bonus of some beautiful wool to spin with.  I am completely satisfied and would order from this company again!!!!! ....SOON

Wonderful Wheel for Anybody August 28, 2010
Reviewer: Gravity Kitty from East Stroudsburg, PA
I got this wheel about a month ago to teach myself how to spin. It's just a wonderful wheel and the double treadle makes it so easy. It's a very versatile wheel with the three ratios. My wheel has the clear finish on it and it's just beautiful.

The wheel is also fantastic if you live in a small area. I just moved into a small apartment and it fits easily into my bedroom closet when it's not in use. It's also great if you travel a lot, it's called a Traveller for a reason!

The only problem that I have with it is that the "built-in lazy kate" isn't that great. I have an Ashford tensioned lazy kate to go with it.

Ashford Traveller, Single Drive, Double Treadle January 9, 2008
Reviewer: JVM from Lynnwood, WA United States
I bought my Traveller single treadle on eBay used.  I could tell by the spoke turnings that it was an older model.  It came in pieces with clear instrructions one can download from the Ashford web site.  It's very easy to assemble.

I'm a new spinner who started with a tiny wheel I won't identify.  I love the Traveller and highly recommend it as a first wheel for beginning spinners.  The vast majority of wheels sold are Ashfords, probably because they are capable, tough work horses, well made and affordable.

I purchased the double treadle kit from Paradise Fibers and received the kit within 3 to 4 days.  DT action is energy efficient and promotes better, smoother spinning.

This is just a lovely wheel.  I will probably, like the vast majority of spinners, buy another wheel/other wheels, but I don't ever see myself relinquishing my friendly Ashford Traveller.  These are wheels that like spinners.
