Joining a stretchy drive band
These new plastic drive bands are great for changing whorls on your wheel without having to re-tie a cord driveband. They are extremely long-lasting and supply extra friction to reduce slippage as well. They come in two diameters and any length you want. The thicker band fits most wheels. The thinner band is needed for the Schacht.
How much do you need?
Measure your current driveband and that will be plenty. You'll want to make the stretchy band several inches shorter than your old cord band. Hold it in place and see how much stretch you need to allow it move to all the whorls and still have enough tension to stay in place.
Making the join
You will probably want to practice this; there is 3 or 4 extra inches for that reason. Have a good flat surface ready to place the 2 ends against. The best thing would be 2 boards nailed at right angles to each other. You'll want to hold a match over one end of the band, place it on the flat surface right against the board which is at right angles to it. Take the other end of the band and butt it up against the melted end. The plastic dries fairly quickly so you'll want to do this quickly. You need to hold them in place for only about 30 seconds. Now, check out your work. If it's too lumpy and bumpy you'll want to cut it off and do it again. You may also be able to trim the join with a razor blade.
