This Drum Carder is the only triple drum we carry and in a class of it's own. It is 15 inches long, 17 inches wide and 10 inches high and has 3 drum! Why are 3 drums important? In short, the 3 drums allow much faster and efficient processing than a typical 2 drum carder setup. This carder produces an 8x22 inch bat. The 3 Drum design will help get rid of the bits of dust, dirt and other powdery debris that you may have missed when you combed the fiber. Make sure to get a set of our Wool Combs to go with this carder for your personal small scale wool processing solution!
Note: These Drum Carders are hard to get and supply is limited so order early if you're in a hurry.
Why do I need a drum carder? Drum Carders and Handcarders straighten the fibers so they are aligned for easier spinning. Also while straightening the fiber blending can be done with various colors and fiber types creating fun and interesting fiber blends. You can blend Superwash merino wool Blending Nylon together for example and create your own magical blend of sock fiber roving ready to spin!
What makes the Howard Brush David Drum Carder better than other carders you carry?*3 drums for faster carding, will actually remove small bits of dust and vegetation
* no pre-teasing
* feed fiber directly to the intake drum
* unique carding cloth with flex action
* staggered rows
* accessories included
Compare to the Louet or Ashford.
This carder has tines that are similar in length to the Ashford but not as long as the Louet. This means, your batt won't be quite as thick as the Louet but the Louet will take quite a bit longer to process the larger bat. As far as speed and quality this carder can't be matched especially at this price. This carder is made from nice quality wood which is nicer than the Louet and Ashford in our opinion. More carder for the money in general to be sure.
3 Drums? Why do I want a Triple Drum Carder?Yes! Great question! The David has 3 Drums which is rare in a carder in this class. The Triple Drum action allows much faster straightening and blending of fibers. It will also remove the last little bits of vegetation and dust from your fiber which is awesome! We tried it here at the shop on some mohair that we washed and combed. Even after combing it still had quite a bit of trapped dirt in the fiber. We tried carding some with the David Triple Drum and we saw bits of dirt and vegetation piling up on the table beneath the carder! Awesome! The other Carders we offer will not remove any extra dirt or veg, this is a feature unique to the David.
